Hunka Bunka (Ballroom) was a huge mega-dance club from 1987 ‘til 2003 located in Sayreville NJ on the site of what is now The Starland Ballroom concert hall. The club had a large "main" room that featured all types of house music and also live shows featuring musicians who at the time were barely known, but would go on to become big stars....like...Jay-Z...The Fugees...Wu Tang Clan...Blink 182... to name a few. There was also a small room called "The Velvet Lounge" that featured Hip-Hop, R&B and Reggae.DJ Eddie Sizzahandz (now one half of the legendary production team/live DJ group Crooklyn Clan) spun hip hop on 12 inch vinyl for a few years (DJ Kipples was taking careful notes) In 1998 Promoters Bon Solid & Joey Enuff joined the team and brought in DJ Richie Santana as the Friday night resident for a party called "Heat Fridays" that introduced a lot of new progressive house into the Bunka scene, to go along with the long running "Dressed Up Saturday Night" party (with resident DJs Kirk Lopez & DJ Kipples) that the club is remembered for most. The one thing that people always tell us about the club is that Hunka Bunka brought people from North Jersey, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and the Jersey Shore all together in a way that no one's done since...and that's a pretty nice way to be remembered.
